The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with the Ministry of Production and Economic Resources – Department of Animal Resources, and in partnership with Education Above All Foundation, and with the support of Qatar Fund for Development, is launching a livestock restocking initiative in Al Jazirah to enhance the state’s food security situation and nutrition and rebuild the livelihoods of conflict-affected households amid the escalating humanitarian crisis.
Livestock provides millions of people across Sudan with essential sources of nutrition and income. When conflict swept through Al Jazirah in 2023, many families lost their herds to displacement and violence, depriving them of their main source of food and livelihood.
Through this initiative, FAO aims to distribute 5000 goats to 1000 pastoral and agro-pastoral households across the Al-Hiwaiwa canal, 60 percent of whom are headed by women. Each household will receive five goats (four females and one male), enabling them to rebuild their herds.
Additionally, each household will receive concentrated animal feed and mineral licks to boost milk production and help reduce soaring malnutrition rates, particularly among children. The distribution will be accompanied by comprehensive training on animal husbandry, feeding, and herd management best practices to strengthen households' knowledge and ensure the long-term health and productivity of their livestock.
"The timing of this goat restocking initiative is critical, and the need is urgent," said Hongjie Yang, FAO Representative in Sudan. "We must support the people of Al Jazirah to rebuild their lives and livelihoods while addressing their immediate nutrition needs."
“Through our partnership with FAO, we aim to ensure that rebuilding livelihoods goes hand in hand with restoring dignity and opportunity,” said Noora Faisal Al-Thani, Head of Silatech Technical , Education Above All Foundation.
“By supporting the acquisition of nutritional support and training, we are not just helping to rebuild herds, but restoring livelihoods, food security, and dignity to families impacted by conflict. This program underscores our commitment to uplifting communities through sustainable, community-driven solutions,” said Sheikha Muthayel Al-Thani, Acting Head of Humanitarian Programs and Projects.
This initiative is made possible through the generous support of Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD)as part of a broader effort to revitalize the Jezirah Scheme, strengthen food security and empower youth with employment opportunities for a sustainable future.
