While early detection remains fundamental, today's challenges demand a broader approach. Modern early warning goes beyond detecting diseases. It combines surveillance with risk monitoring, data analysis, communication and decision support to help veterinary authorities understand not only where disease is today, but where it may emerge tomorrow.

The United Nations’ international food standards-setting body, the Codex Alimentarius Commission, is meeting on 6 to 10 July 2026 to adopt food safety and quality standards. Charged with protecting consumer health and ensuring fair practices in the food trade, the Codex Alimentarius Commission is the executive organ of the Joint FAO/WHO Food Standards Programme. Brief descriptions of some of the standards adopted at the 49th Session of the Commission are published below.

FAO’s benchmark measure of world food commodity prices edged down in June, as lower quotations for cereals, sugar and dairy products outweighed higher quotations for vegetable oils and meat, according to new data released Friday by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

Yet, the soils that support those decisions can vary dramatically across short distances. Two fields may receive the same rainfall and the same management, while producing very different results. Understanding these differences is becoming increasingly important as countries seek to increase productivity while making more efficient use of limited resources.

Farmers, extension workers and governments now have a powerful new tool to help identify the crops best suited to specific parcels of land, enabling more efficient use of resources and greater resilience. FAO today launched CropSuit, a free web-based application that combines soil information with climate information, topography, land cover and other environmental data to identify the crops most likely to perform well in a given location.
