Around 733 million people faced hunger in 2023, equivalent to one in eleven people globally and one in five in Africa, according to the latest State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) report published today by five United Nations specialized agencies.

Each year, the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report provides an update on the global progress or setbacks in achieving the 2030 goal of Zero Hunger. The 2024 report indicates that between 713 and 757 million people experienced hunger in 2023. It also reveals that 28.9% of the global population, or approximately 2.33 billion people, face moderate or severe food insecurity, a figure that has remained virtually unchanged over the past three years.

Since the onset of the monsoon season, Bangladesh has been affected by heavy flooding. One month after tropical cyclone  REMAL-24  hit Bangladesh on 27 May 2024, the Haor region was affected by heavy rain, triggering flooding and flash floods, between 20 and 25 June 2024. The Data in Emergencies (DIEM) team at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) examined satellite images in the days following these floods to understand the impact. This StoryMap provides an assessment of the potential impact of the flooding on agricultural production and livelihoods in Bangladesh.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in partnership with the World Health Organization, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Ministry of Health, Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change and United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Global Health Security Program (GHSP) organized a table-top Simulation exercise and developed a Contingency Plan for the prevention and control of Rift Valley Fever in Sierra Leone.

Climate change is increasing the susceptibility of the world's forests to stressors such as wildfires and pests, according to a new flagship publication by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) that emphasizes the role of innovation in achieving a sustainable future for the forestry sector. The report, titled “The State of the World’s Forests 2024: Forest-sector innovations towards a more sustainable future,” was released on Monday at the 27th session of the Committee on Forestry (COFO), which is being held at FAO’s headquarters in Rome until Friday.

Funded by the Government of Canada, the four-year project (2024-2028) will be implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Belize, the Commonwealth of Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Suriname. A collaborative effort involving Canada, FAO, and local government and civil society partners, the project will enhance Caribbean farmers’ resilience to climate change and contribute to economic growth in the region.

Last year the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Investment Centre provided investment and finance solutions in around 110 countries according to the Centre’s 2023 Annual Review published today. As the FAO Investment Centre continues to assist countries realize the promise of the Four Betters, its support included the design of 38 public investment projects - more than half involving climate and environment-related goals - approved by financing partners in 26 countries worth around $6.6 billion in new investment.

The 2024 edition of the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) report, to be officially launched on July 24, takes a deep dive into salient themes regarding financing for development, in particular financing for food security and nutrition to meet the targets of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2, with the aim of creating better identifying opportunities, strengthening accountability and traceability, and ultimately improving financing productivity.

Gita Adikhari realised something significant had changed when her farm in the Jhapa District of eastern Nepal yielded nearly double the amount she would normally harvest. The bumper potato crop was not by chance, but as a result of learnings from a Farmer Field School (FFS) run by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) with funding from the Green Climate Fund.

FAO and CIMMYT signed a Memorandum of Understanding establishing a Partnership for the Vision for Adapted Crops and Soils (VACS) initiative.

This aims to bolster food security and resilience in the region. The 36th Session of the Committee on Fisheries (COFI36) began today at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Rome. The Committee on Fisheries (COFI) is the largest global gathering of policymakers, experts and partners in the fisheries and aquaculture sector. This week’s (8-12 July) COFI36 meeting will focus on the vital role of fisheries and aquaculture in tackling food insecurity, malnutrition, and poverty, stressing their ability to alleviate hunger, drive sustainable growth, and reverse environmental degradation.

As part of its ongoing efforts to maintain the preparedness  to fight the desert locust, especially in invasion countries, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations conducted a crucial refresher training for locust officers from frontline counties as well as crop protection officers from Plant Protection and Food Safety Directorate. Participants were equipped with principles of desert locust survey and reporting.

The benchmark for world food commodity prices was unchanged in June, as increases in international quotations for vegetable oils, sugar and dairy products offset a decrease in those for cereals, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) reported Friday. The FAO Food Price Index, which tracks monthly changes in the international prices of a set of globally-traded food commodities, averaged 120.6 points in June, the same as its revised figure for May. The index is now 2.1 percent lower than its year-earlier value and 24.8 percent below its March 2022 peak.
