The benchmark for world food commodity prices declined marginally in August, as decreases in quotations for sugar, meat and cereals outweighed increases in those for vegetable oils and dairy products, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) reported Friday. The FAO Food Price Index, which tracks monthly changes in the international prices of a set of globally-traded food commodities, averaged 120.7 points in August, slightly down from its revised July figure and 1.1 percent below its corresponding value in August 2023.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), through the Global Bioenergy Partnership (GBEP), is partnering with the Government of Uganda to host a National Workshop on Bioethanol for Clean Cooking. This workshop set on 12 September 2024 in Kampala, Uganda, is a key component of the GBEP-led project, “International Dialogues on Bioethanol as a Clean Cooking Fuel in Selected Countries in Africa and Asia,” with Uganda being one of the prioritized pilot countries. The upcoming national workshop, endorsed by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development of Uganda (MEMD) and with funding support from the United States Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service (USDA-FAS), aims to build consensus and knowledge on the viability and sustainability of bioethanol as a clean cooking fuel.

To improve the quality of services in the diagnosis of animal diseases, food quality control and the fight against antimicrobial resistance (AMR), the National Agricultural Development Support Laboratory (LANADA) received funding from the World Bank for the renovation of its laboratories. To implement this programme, the LANADA requested FAO ECTAD's technical assistance from laboratory experts to assess the ongoing renovation and assess the state of operation of the regional laboratories.

In the small village of Betano, nestled in the lush landscapes of central Timor-Leste, a simple dispute over a humble legume has caused a quiet revolution to take root.It all started in 2019, when the women in the village became interested in piloting climate-smart agriculture techniques, and in particular conservation agriculture, which were being promoted in the area by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

The success of the  Farmer Field Schools (FFS) programme extends beyond Sayed Osman. In Jawzjan province alone, 500 farmers across 20 FFS groups have benefited from the training and support provided. The programme is part of a broader initiative, supported by USAID, aims at enhancing food security, nutrition, and resilience among vulnerable smallholder families in Afghanistan. by July 2026, the project aims to establish 2 000 FFS, reaching 60 000 farmers across eight provinces.

Nirosha Dilmini has been harvesting eggplants since the crack of dawn on her small plot of land in the village of Tanamalvila in southeastern Sri Lanka’s Monaragala district. She’s been putting her efforts into farming here for six years now. But never has she had such a lucrative year as 2023 in terms of produce and profits. She attributes this transformation to the Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) programme implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) with funding from the United Nations Sri Lanka Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Fund.

Persistently high levels of hunger underscore the urgent need to address global food insecurity. In 2023, nearly 282 million people faced acute food insecurity driven by conflict, climate extremes and economic shocks —an increase of 24 million compared to 2022. The outlook for 2024 is equally alarming, with famine imminent in Gaza and already confirmed in Sudan, while parts of Haiti, Mali, and South Sudan are at risk of starvation.

In January 2024, everything changed for Sayed Osman when he joined the Farmer Field School (FFS), introduced by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and ActionAid. FFS brings together 20-25 farmers in a group, providing hands- on training in modern cultivation methods, pest control and the use of high-quality seeds. He learned new practices that significantly increased his wheat yields.

The Youth Assembly, as WFF’s policy and action arm, builds young people’s capacity in policy advocacy and fosters intergenerational partnerships, collaboration.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is delivering 2 452 veterinary kits to livestock-keeping households in Gaza to improve animal health and preserve herding livelihoods across the Strip.The near ten-month conflict has caused the collapse of local food production and agrifood value chains, contributing to the rapid deterioration of food security in Gaza, with 96 percent of the population or 2.15 million people facing high levels of acute food insecurity and a looming risk of famine.

The Ambassador of United States to Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, H.E. Donna Ann Welton visited a farm in Umawain Kraik, Viqueque and interacted with farmers. The farmers of this village including the owner of the farm (Augusto) are organized into farmers groups by current US assisted project to provide various kinds of supports including training, seeds and advisory services on implementation of CSA/CA and NSA practices.

On August 8, 2024, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) welcomed the United States Representative to the United Nations Agencies for Food and Agriculture in Rome, Ambassador Jeffrey Prescott. Leading a delegation which included representatives from the US Embassy, he visited the Lubumbashi Veterinary Laboratory (LVL) in Haut-Katanga province as part of his official mission. He was accompanied by Aristide Ongone Obame, the FAO Country Representative.

In response to alarming new findings confirming famine conditions in parts of Darfur, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is urging an immediate cessation of hostilities, rapid scale up of life-saving food, nutrition and cash assistance as well as of the emergency agricultural aid. This is critical in conflict-affected areas to address immediate needs and avert the risk of famine from increasing and affecting other locations across Sudan.

The benchmark for world food commodity prices was broadly unchanged in July for the second month in a row, as increases in international quotations of vegetable oils. meat  products and sugar offset an ongoing decrease in those for cereals, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations reported Friday. The FAO Food Price Index, which tracks monthly changes in the international prices of a set of globally-traded food commodities, averaged 120.8 points in July, marginally below its revised 121.0 figure for June. The index is now 3.1 percent lower than its corresponding value one year earlier.
