The closure of the Strait of Hormuz is not a temporary shipping disruption but the beginning of a systemic agrifood shock that could trigger a severe global food price crisis within six to 12 months. Avoiding such an outcome will require alternative trade routes, restraint on export restrictions, protection of humanitarian flows, and buffers to absorb higher transport costs, FAO has warned.

A successful 49th session of the Codex Committee on Food Labelling has concluded in Ottawa, Canada. Upon adoption of the session report, Chairperson Parthiban Muthukumarasamy congratulated the delegates for the week’s achievements.  The Committee has completed work on three key agenda items and forwarded the agreed texts to the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) for adoption.

FAO, WFP and UNICEF warned today that nearly 19.5 million people – two out of every five people in Sudan - are currently facing crisis levels of acute food insecurity (IPC Phase 3 or above) across Sudan, according to the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis. As the civil conflict enters its fourth year, the protracted hunger crisis in Sudan shows little sign of abating as violence, displacement and severe humanitarian access constraints are impacting children, families and communities across the country.

The 49th session of the Codex Committee on Food Labelling (CCFL) opened in Ottawa, Canada, with a warm welcome from Chairperson, Parthiban Muthukumarasamy, and opening remarks from Dr Celia Lourenco, Associate Assistant Deputy Minister of the Health Products and Food Branch of Health Canada. “Canada places a high importance on the work done by Codex. Like many of you, we believe that the work of Codex is imperative to achieving our national food safety, public health and consumer protection objectives,” said Dr Lourenco.

The rise of violence linked to armed groups – in both rural and urban areas –, economic instability, disrupted supply chains, and recurring climate shocks continue to exacerbate food insecurity in Haiti, where more than one in two Haitians – or 5.83 million people – are acutely food insecure (IPC Phase 3 or above). In this context, funding from RHPF will support an emergency humanitarian response aimed at saving lives by rapidly reducing acute food insecurity.

Transboundary animal diseases (TADs) and plant pests continue to pose major threats to agrifood systems, livelihoods and trade worldwide. Their capacity to spread rapidly across borders means that countries must be prepared not only to respond to outbreaks, but also to coordinate prevention, preparedness and control efforts at regional and global levels. Managing these threats requires strong technical capacity, rapid information exchange and a workforce equipped to implement complex response measures.

Acute food insecurity and malnutrition levels remain alarmingly high and deeply entrenched, with crises increasingly concentrated in a core group of countries, according to the Global Report on Food Crises (GRFC) 2026, released today by an international alliance.  In its tenth edition, the GRFC shows that acute hunger has doubled over the past decade, with two famines declared last year for the first time in the report’s history.
