Linking Agriculture to Nutrition Education to Improve Infant and Young Child Feeding

Good complementary feeding helps to prevent chronic undernutrition

FAO supports national efforts to improve food security through agriculture and dietary diversification and practical hands-on learning to enable families to practice good nutrition behaviours in complementary feeding.

We aim to:

  • Raise awareness among policy makers and the public of the benefits of food and dietary diversification for good family and young child nutrition.
  • Empower communities to grow, purchase, process and prepare a wide diversity of nutrient-rich foods, especially legumes, vegetables, fruit, oil seeds and animal source foods.
  • Achieve healthy eating behaviours and enhance the use of locally available and affordable foods through nutrition education and social mobilisation.
  • Strengthen national capacities in nutrition by training agricultural and health extension staff, farmer leaders and volunteer nutrition promoters.
  • Create supportive environments by mobilising community networks that help to support families to practice good nutrition.

FAO’s practical experience and research results in Cambodia and Malawi illustrate how children’s nutrition can benefit from an integrated approach to agriculture and nutrition education.
