FAO and the University of Western Cape joined forces in 2018 to strengthen knowledge and implement capacity development activities in the field of marine sciences, and facilitate trainings and academic activities in support of the application of the ecosystem approach in the management of marine fisheries promoted by the EAF-Nansen Programme. The support to M.Sc. and PhD marine science students is a priority for this partnership. Activities are funded by the South Africa’s National Research Foundation while the FAO offers technical expertise to students.

The Unión de Universidades de América Latina y el Caribe and FAO collaborate to promote knowledge exchange and capacity development through academic activities, conferences and symposia in the areas of food security, agriculture, rural development and public policies.

A trilateral partnership between FAO, UfM and the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM) is supporting development and adoption of an innovative and science-based framework of actions to support the transition towards more sustainable food systems.

The Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and FAO started its partnership in 2016 to promote food security and nutrition through the sustainable management of natural resources and mitigation of climate change. The cooperation includes support to programmes such as climate-smart agriculture and disaster risk management in the agricultural sector in Latin America, and facilitates knowledge exchanges including the development of a regional network to promote the adoption of Voluntary Guidelines of Tenure.

2022: Developing capacities to enhance sustainable agrifood systems and combating climate change

The collaboration between FAO and the University of Torino started in 2008 with the objective to promote activities connected with the sustainable development of mountain areas. Since then, the International Programme on Research and Training on Sustainable Management of Mountain Areas (IPROMO) has been training stakeholders on management policies, community approaches and methodologies to assess its social and ecologic impacts.

Established in 2017, the collaboration between FAO and Université Laval aims at enhancing institutional knowledge exchanges and strengthening capacities in the areas of climate change, fight against desertification and food security and nutrition.  Furthermore, the collaboration focus to develop activities on knowledge exchanges on agroforestry, water management and raise awareness on issues related to food and nutrition security and the Sustainable Development Goals.

FAO and the School of Law of the University of California Los Angeles have been cooperating since 2019 to support the development of regulatory frameworks to enhance food security and nutrition. The partnership promotes research in areas such as food safety, food quality laws, consumer protection, and food fraud.

FAO and Wageningen University & Research renewed and expanded their long‑standing collaboration through a new Memorandum of Agreement signed in November 2025, deepening joint efforts to accelerate agrifood systems transformation in line with the 2030 Agenda. The strengthened partnership focuses on science-based innovation, capacity development, and knowledge exchange to advance the Four Betters, with cooperation spanning digital agriculture and AI, global innovation hubs, agrifood technology knowledge platforms, sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, food security and nutrition, systems-based agrifood transformation, science–policy interface strengthening, and youth-led innovation through the Youth Food Lab Global Incubation Programme.
