Union for the Mediterranean (UfM)
A trilateral partnership between FAO, UfM and the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM) is supporting development and adoption of an innovative and science-based framework of actions to support the transition towards more sustainable food systems.

Universidad Politécnica de Madrid
The Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and FAO started its partnership in 2016 to promote food security and nutrition through the sustainable management of natural resources and mitigation of climate change. The cooperation includes support to programmes such as climate-smart agriculture and disaster risk management in the agricultural sector in Latin America, and facilitates knowledge exchanges including the development of a regional network to promote the adoption of Voluntary Guidelines of Tenure.

2022: Developing capacities to enhance sustainable agrifood systems and combating climate change
Universidade Federal do Paraná
FAO and the Universidade Federal do Paraná have partnered to foster research on sustainable food and agriculture, particularly practices for healthy diets, food security and nutrition, integrated landscape management, water resources, forest resources management, and rural economics.

Università degli Studi di Sassari
In June 2022, FAO and the University of Sassari, Desertification Research Centre, signed a General Agreement to enhance the visibility of the actions and outcomes of the “Sustainable Approaches to Land and Water Management in the Mediterranean Drylands” Project (SALAM-MED). The agreement also aims to strengthen the capacity of farmers and other stakeholders, fostering innovation in sustainable land and water management across the Mediterranean region.

Università degli Studi di Torino
The collaboration between FAO and the University of Torino started in 2008 with the objective to promote activities connected with the sustainable development of mountain areas. Since then, the International Programme on Research and Training on Sustainable Management of Mountain Areas (IPROMO) has been training stakeholders on management policies, community approaches and methodologies to assess its social and ecologic impacts.

Université Laval
Established in 2017, the collaboration between FAO and Université Laval aims at enhancing institutional knowledge exchanges and strengthening capacities in the areas of climate change, fight against desertification and food security and nutrition. Furthermore, the collaboration focus to develop activities on knowledge exchanges on agroforestry, water management and raise awareness on issues related to food and nutrition security and the Sustainable Development Goals.

University of California Los Angeles
FAO and the School of Law of the University of California Los Angeles have been cooperating since 2019 to support the development of regulatory frameworks to enhance food security and nutrition. The partnership promotes research in areas such as food safety, food quality laws, consumer protection, and food fraud.

University of Freiburg
In 2019, the University of Freiburg and FAO started a collaboration in the areas of forestry, natural resource management and rural development, focusing onthe enhancement of technical capacities and knowledge exchange. A further objective of the partnership is to engage young professionals through the promotion of workshops, lectures, trainings, and visits, in topics focusing on forest and natural resources management, and on mitigating the effects of climate change.

Wageningen University and Research
Having a long history of partnership, a new Memorandum of Agreement was signed in 2021 to revitalize the partnership for more cohesive and targeted cooperation to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Agenda. The newly strengthened partnership will focus on developing capacities, facilitating knowledge exchanges, and providing resources to advance the Four Betters – Better Production, Better Nutrition, Better Environment, Better Life, by harnessing science-based evidence. Under the new framework agreement, eight technical areas of cooperation have been established: improved agrifood economics; sustainable animal production and health; impacts of climate change, biodiversity, and environment; sustainable fisheries and aquaculture; improved food security and nutrition; strengthened agrifood systems and food safety; sustainable forestry; and partnership enhancement.
