Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock (GASL)

The Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock (GASL) is a partnership of stakeholders committed to the sustainable development of the livestock sector. It answers the need for concerted and collective action to address the sector’s unprecedented challenges.

With global population projected to reach 9.6 billion in 2050, demand for livestock products is projected to grow by 20 percent. The sector needs to respond to a growing demand for meat, eggs and milk driven by a growing world population, but also by increasing affluence and urbanization.

GASL builds consensus on the path towards sustainability and catalyzes coherent and collective practice change through dialogue, consultation and joint analysis, uniting the forces of the public and private sectors, producers, research and academic institutions, NGOs, social movements and community-based organizations, and foundations.

GASL's actions and Theory of Change are organised along four sustainability domains:

  1. Food and nutrition security
  2. Livelihoods and economic growth
  3. Animal health and animal welfare
  4. Climate and natural resources use
History

The partnership has been built through the consultation of a broad range of sector stakeholders, including governments, research and academia, the private sector, civil society and NGOs and inter-governmental organizations, since 2010. Together, these participants defined its nature and purpose, focus and priority areas, type of activities and operating modalities. They also agreed on the nature of engagement.
