Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock (GASL)

The partnership’s operational modalities reflect its multi-stakeholder and consensual nature. It consists of the following components: 

  • An open Multi-Stakeholder Platform (MSP) to consult and build consensus on priority issues and actions. 
    Composition: representatives of all relevant sector stakeholder groups which have signed the Consensus. Stakeholders who have not signed the Consensus can participate as observers only.  
  • A Guiding Group to provide overall strategic direction and guidance, and to coordinate, monitor and review the partnership’s activities. 
    Composition:  up to five representatives from 7 constituency clusters (Public sector, private sector, Academia/research, donors, NGO, social movements and community-based organizations) and, by invitation, Action Network Coordinators.  
  • Action Networks, to develop and implement thematic work program (currently nine) 
    Composition: only stakeholders who have signed the Consensus can participate.
  • A Secretariat, hosted by FAO, to support the partnership.

The partnership has a collaboration structure formed by seven cluster groups:

Public Sector – representatives from governments
Private Sector – representatives from private sector organizations
Academia/research – representatives from research organization and universities
NGOs – representatives from interest groups such as animals welfare and environmental or livelihood non-governmental organizations
Donors – representatives from monetary contributors to the Agenda’s Trust Fund
Social movements and community based organizations – representatives of pastoralists, indigenous people, agricultural workers, small farmers and peasants.
Inter – governmental and multi-lateral institutions – institutions that have a mandate in livestock sector development.
The Secretariat

GASL is supported by a Secretariat which is hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

The Secretariat acts as a networking and liaison point for members, to ensure greater participation and impact. In particular, the Secretariat plays a facilitating role in helping members build and develop joint activities, promote closer collaboration, and achieve greater coherence and better results for sustainable development. It consists of a chairperson, a manager, a technical officer and a communication officer.
