Strengthening Food Insecurity Monitoring in Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and the Niger

More than 20 million people in the Sahel Region suffer from food insecurity. Without knowledge and data to understand the current situation, interventions are difficult to design and risk being ineffective. In recent years, the proliferation of food security indicators has created further challenges and, as a result, policymakers and development partners struggle to adequately target where and how to intervene. Therefore, this project aimed to improve food security monitoring by training staff within national institutions in Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and the Niger to derive and analyse food security indicators using household food consumption survey data and increase the effectiveness of policies to reduce food insecurity.

Resultados obtenidos

By engaging national and regional stakeholders, capacities to collect and analyse relevant data for food security assessments were enhanced. Existing data at FAO and national household survey data were analysed, and staff from national institutions were trained on ADePT-FSM to process microdata from household surveys, compile food balance sheets and derive national and sub national food security indicators. Better food security statistics and national reports were produced, which allow policymakers to formulate and evaluate policies on the basis of sound evidence. Finally, recipient and other CILSS countries in the region were sensitized on SDG monitoring, and needs for further capacity development activities were assessed.

Repercusiones

National food security statistics are crucial for monitoring progress on hunger targets within the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As a result of the project, food insecurity monitoring in Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and the Niger was improved, and policies undertaken at the national and international level to reduce food insecurity will be better targeted and evaluated. Partnerships among stakeholders were strengthened through the regional initiatives implemented, and project beneficiaries have ownership of the project results and are able to conduct food security assessments in the medium to long term, with limited external assistance.

Actividades

  • Improved quality and quantity of data and knowledge on food security at national and international levels.
  • Comprehensively reviewed and analysed existing national and household survey data.
  • Technical capacities to monitor food security increased, through national and regional workshops and training on ADePT-FSM and food balance sheets.
  • Reports on national food security assessments completed in four of the five countries.
  • Countries sensitized on the SDG monitoring process and progress reporting for SDG Target 2.1 (to end hunger and ensure access by all people to safe, nutritious and sufficient food all year round by 2030).
