Complete local residue assessment

Principle

In a complete local residue evaluation, the registration authority conducts the different steps of the comprehensive residue evaluation based, as much as feasible, on national/local data.
 

Applicability

A complete local residue evaluation can be conducted if local data are available, in particular results from local residue trials and national food balance sheet as a basis for the dietary risk assessment.

Assessments

The complete local residue assessment contains the following steps
 
  1. Establish residue definition(s)
    Appropriate residue definition(s) of the pesticide, both for dietary risk assessment and for MRL compliance monitoring, are established.
     
  2. Estimate residue levels
    Residue levels of the pesticide in the relevant commodity(ies) are estimated, on the basis of Good Agricultural Practice (GAP). This is done by selecting representative supervised field trial data and defining the Supervised Trials Median Residues (STMR) and the Highest Residues (HR).
     
  3. Assess dietary risks
    Dietary risks of the expected residues on the treated commodities are assessed, both following long-term and short-term dietary exposure. Preferably, this is done on the basis of national food balance sheets.
     
  4. Set national MRL limits
    If the risk assessment has shown that dietary risks are acceptable when the pesticide is used according to critical GAP, national Maximum Residue Limits (MRL) may be set.

The left-hand side of the chart refers to the bridging an existing residue assessment . Bridging may reduce the need for local data generation, in case such data are not fully available.
