FAO Capacity Development Program on Safe the Use of Sludge in Agriculture, Supports Water Scarcity Solutions in the Arab Region!

The capacity development program on the safe use of sludge for agriculture organized during the period of 24 June to 14 August 2024.

The Water Scarcity Initiative at FAORNE recently organized a capacity development program on the safe use of sludge for agriculture during the period of 24 June to 14 August 2024. This activity was implemented in the framework of the FAO support to the Joint Technical Secretariat (composed of the Technical Secretariat of the Arab Ministerial Water Council and the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development) in the implementation of the recommendation of the High-Level Joint Water-Agriculture Technical Committee of the League of Arab States.
The capacity development program targeted officials from Ministries of Water Resources and Agriculture, in particular water expert working in the field of treated wastewater reuse and sludge reuse. Official request for nominations were sent to countries by the Joint Technical Secretariat and 19 out of 22 Arab countries responded favorably by nominating participants.
Countries were divided into three groups according to geographical zones, economic situation, etc. Three virtual sessions were conducted for the three groups in addition to bilateral meetings conducted with each country to prepare their contribution to the training from a national perspective. The capacity development program was concluded by a virtual ceremonial meeting held on 2 October 2024 where all participants were invited to exchange on the outcomes of the training.
