Under the framework of the Water Scarcity Initiative, a consultation workshop was held at the Ministry of Water and Irrigation (MWI) in Amman, Jordan, to finalize the development of the Sanitation Safety Plan (SSP) for the Wadi Musa treatment plant. The workshop convened key stakeholders and technical experts to refine key findings and strategize the next steps for implementing the SSP through a national pilot project.
The discussions primarily focused on the development of incremental improvement interventions, being critical step toward ensuring the sustainability and efficiency of sanitation management of treated wastewater reuse in Jordan.
The Jordanian team, comprising representatives from the Ministry of Water and Irrigation (MWI), Ministry of Agriculture, and Ministry of Environment, along with technical experts from the Water Authority of Jordan, Aqaba Water Company, and GIS specialists from MWI, has made significant progress in following the WHO’s 2022 SSP manual and guided by FAO Framework for Piloting Sanitation Safety Plans in the Arab Region. The SSP national team with technical support provided by FAO, have already completed key phases, including system description of the treatment facility, risk identification, and descriptive risk assessment for Wadi Musa’s sanitation Plant.
This initiative represents a significant stride in strengthening Jordan’s sanitation framework and aligns with the country’s commitment to safe and sustainable sanitation solutions, particularly on the use of treated wastewater for agriculture.
A final workshop, set for July 2025, will mark the transition from planning to implementation, presenting the finalized action plans designed to enhance risk mitigation, monitoring, and cross-sectoral coordination in the Wadi Musa region.
