In the rolling hills of Rwanda, livestock farming has long been a way of life. For Elias Mugabowakigeli, aged 61 years and father of four children, rearing traditional cattle was a skill he inherited from his family. “I grew up in a home where cows were everything. We practiced farming the way our parents and grandparents did,” he recalls.

In Rwanda, the Joint Programme ‘Accelerating Progress Towards the Economic Empowerment of Rural Women’ (JP RWEE) was implemented by FAO, IFAD, WFP, and UN Women, in collaboration with the government and partners. The program benefited 18,275 direct beneficiaries (10,406 women and 7,869 men) and 87,436 indirect beneficiaries (46,853 women and 40,583 men), organized into 51 cooperatives and groups.
