Uganda Flags Off First-Ever Shipment of Dried Chili to China

Uganda has officially flagged off its first-ever container of dried chili for export to the People’s Republic of China signaling deepening trade ties, stronger agricultural value chains and the growing success of the FAO–China–Uganda South–South Cooperation (SSC) Programme.

The ceremony, held at Bunambo Village in Namasagali Sub-county, Kamuli District, was officiated by H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, President of the Republic of Uganda.

FAO seeks to mainstream SSTC at corporate and operational levels and is optimizing the impact and visibility of SSTC across the regions, sub-regions and countries, including through strengthening relationships with partners, towards achieving the SDGs. Close engagement with countries and regions, resource partners as well as with FAO streams/offices/centers, is critical for improving the SSTC modality mechanism.

In 2022, Uganda contributed nearly US$ 10 million to the Phase 3 of a SSC project with China. This is one of the most significant contributions of its kind from a beneficiary country and will support four areas, namely: 1) establishment of an integrated technology transfer base; 2) development of high yielding schemes for rice and foxtail millet; 3) support for livestock improvement programmes; and 4) development of the aquaculture value chain.  

Strengthening agribusiness incubation ecosystems in Africa

Entrepreneurship plays a pivotal role in innovation, new agribusiness and generation of capital, but few African countries have policies, strategies or dedicated incubation support programmes. Ways to build up Africa’s capacities in agribusiness incubators and accelerators to find the continent’s next agribusiness success stories was the focus of a 5-day workshop in Kampala this week.
