Viet Nam

Our office

As a trusted partner for sustainable development, built on more than 45 years of cooperation and results, FAO has supported Viet Nam’s recovery and dynamic evolution from a food insecure nation to one of the world’s leading agriculture exporters.

As one of the first United Nations agencies on the ground to support the post-conflict recovery and deliver critical technical assistance to restore the nation’s agriculture, forestry and fisheries resources, FAO Viet Nam has since implemented more than 500 projects to generate significant advancements in sustainable agricultural development, food security and nutrition, forestry, fisheries and prevention of animal diseases that threaten global public health.

Through five-year programmes, known as Country Programming Frameworks, FAO makes key contributions to country-led national initiatives in partnership with the government and stakeholders.

The current Country Programming Framework 2022–2026 was formulated based on FAO’s Strategic Framework for 2022–2031, articulated around four key pillars, also known as the 4 Betters: Better production, Better nutrition, a Better environment and a Better life. Each of these aspirations contains concrete programme priority areas which inform the actions taken by FAO at the global, regional and national levels. Importantly, FAO’s work in Viet Nam places the 2030 Agenda at its centre and uses key Sustainable Development Goals and their indicators to shape interventions and track progress.

At a local level, FAO’s development priorities and framework in Viet Nam dovetails with national development goals as articulated by the Socio-Economic Development Strategy (2021–2030) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework 2022–2026.

While an active partner promoting the agrifood systems transformation agenda and strengthening related partnerships, financial architecture, knowledge sharing and governance, FAO is also casting its eye to the future and emerging opportunities in digital public goods, AI-enabled advisory services, nature-based solutions, sustainable forestry and green financing instruments.

As Viet Nam enters the next phase of its development journey, the challenge is not only to respond to change, but to shape it — deliberately, inclusively and sustainably. That is why FAO is committed to working alongside the government, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, donors and partners to ensure that progress in agrifood systems translates into tangible improvements in livelihoods, resilience and food security, leaving no one behind.
