This indicator focuses on national seed policy and seed laws in the country of the reporting National Focal Point (NFP).
It is based on information reported in response to question 12.5 of the Reporting Format for Monitoring the Implementation of the Second Global Plan of Action for PGRFA.
Question 12.5 requests the NFP to provide reference(s) to the national seed policy(ies) and to the seed law(s).
Specific information on national seed policies and seed laws might be found in the FAO operated FAOLEX database (www.fao.org/faolex). FAOLEX is a comprehensive and up-to-date legislative and policy database, one of the world's largest electronic collections of national laws, regulations and policies on food, agriculture and natural resources management.
As the statistics in many countries might not be adequate to answer this question exactly, countries are invited to provide the best proxy values. Alternatively, the question could be partially answered and/or an expert estimate of the acreage percentages of the five most important crops sown with seeds that meet the quality standards of the formal seed sector could be provided in the ‘Comment’ box on the page of the indicator associated to this question.

The indicator is calculated as the existence (existed/did not exist) of a national seed policy and seed laws in the country at the end of the reporting period.

National Focal Point rating for the country/region selected is displayed.
Countries, total is the total number of reporting countries in the selected region reported by the NFP at the end of the reporting period.
Countries with seed policy/law, total is the total number of reporting countries with a national seed policy and seed laws in the selected region reported by the NFP at the end of the reporting period.

A map showing reporting countries is displayed as the existence (existed/did not exist) of a national seed policy and seed laws in the selected country/region reported by the NFP at the end of the reporting period. Actual country data are depicted as a pop-up box when the mouse is placed over the country in the map.
A histogram of the total values is displayed by CGRFA regions. Actual values are depicted as a pop-up box when the mouse is placed over the histogram bar.
