The Director-General of FAO along with the heads of the Rome-based UN agencies and other guests will participate in the ceremony, which will feature special messages from Pope Francis and the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, and the presentation of FAO Awards.

This year, the Junior World Food Day will join forces with the World Food Forum’s School Assembly as one large event for students at FAO Headquarters at 10.00 on 17 October 2024. Register your class now and have your students join a conversation on food with international leaders, youth activists, sports food heroes and celebrities. This fun event will be packed with stories, music, interactive quizzes and games, guaranteed to inspire action for a sustainable food-secure future.
The event will also be live streamed on fao.org.
This year’s exhibit spotlights food as a human right, emphasizing the need for accessible, nutritious, affordable, and sustainable food for everyone. As part of the exhibit, visitors can choose a food action, snap a photo and share it on a live interactive photo wall—a global mosaic showcasing our collective effort to drive positive change. Visitors can explore the Youth Corner, featuring fun SDG-themed learning activities and two new Children's Activity Books designed to inspire and educate young minds.
Students will get to see a special exterior window display featuring actions for a food-secure future and inspiring stories of food heroes worldwide. And there's even more to see as the 80-1 Countdown to FAO's anniversary begins!
As we celebrate FAO’s 79th anniversary World Food Day, the 80-1 Countdown begins! This year marks the start of a journey leading to FAO’s milestone 80th anniversary in 2025. A special 365-day countdown experience celebrating eight decades of achievements and innovation in food and agriculture with interactive activities for FAO Members and employees.
During the week of World Food Day, visitors can explore a multisensory and interactive experience tracing FAO’s history and offering a sneak peek at the upcoming Food and Agriculture Museum and Network, set to open next year on the occasion of FAO's 80th anniversary. That's not all! Visitors will also get to explore the first decade of the Organization's achievements with a unique installation by FAO's marble staircase with a new decade set to be unveiled each month on different floors, starting in early 2025.
