Entre 2017 et 2019, bon nombre des bureaux de représentation de la FAO dans le monde célèbrent leur 40ème anniversaire. Après quatre décennies de collaboration fructueuse, le travail de la FAO est aujourd'hui plus que jamais aligné sur les priorités des gouvernements hôtes pour réaliser les Objectifs de développement durable (ODD) à l’échelle de la planète grâce à des actions au niveau local. En tant qu’institution axée sur les connaissances, largement présente sur le terrain, la FAO met en œuvre des programmes et des projets en coopération avec les membres et partenaires en vue d'atteindre l'objectif commun #FaimZéro et les autres ODD à l’horizon 2030.

Alors que la FAO fournissait un appui technique aux États Membres sans disposer de présence permanente sur le terrain, l’ouverture en 1977 de la Représentation dans le pays au Liban le 14 juin de cette même année a marqué le début de la présence à long terme de la FAO au niveau national.

Le réseau actuel de bureaux décentralisés de la FAO couvre 152 pays. Au sein de ce réseau, il y a 85 Bureaux de représentation de la FAO, dont bon nombre ont été établis entre 1977 et 1979.
Même si l'ouverture des Représentations en Europe et en Asie centrale est plus récente (1990-2000), la FAO a commencé à mettre en œuvre ses premiers projets dans cette région en 1977.
La FAO dispose de 5 Bureaux régionaux et de 10 Bureaux sous-régionaux, 85 Représentations dont 6 Bureaux de liaison et partenariat, 37 bureaux à accréditations multiples, 1 Bureau de Programme, 4 Correspondants nationaux, 6 Bureaux de liaison, 2 Bureaux d'information,...
Les Bureaux de liaison et partenariat constituent un moyen de lancer ou de renforcer la présence de l’Organisation dans les pays et d’améliorer la collaboration avec les donateurs et les partenaires.
Les Bureaux décentralisés représentent 45 pour cent de l'ensemble du personnel de la FAO.
