Entre 2017 y 2019, muchas de las oficinas de representación de la FAO en el mundo celebran su 40° Aniversario. Después de cuatro décadas de fructífera colaboración, el trabajo de la FAO está hoy más que nunca alineado con las prioridades de los gobiernos anfitriones para lograr los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) a través de la acción local.  En cuanto institución basada en el conocimiento y sólidamente presente en el terreno, la FAO lleva adelante programas y proyectos de cooperación con los países miembros y sus asociados para alcanzar el objetivo común de un mundo con #HambreCero y los demás Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible para el año 2030.

Si bien la FAO ya brindaba apoyo técnico a los países miembros antes de tener una presencia permanente sobre el terreno, la apertura de la Representación en el Líbano, el 14 de junio 1977, marcó el comienzo de la presencia de la Organización en el terreno a largo  plazo y a nivel nacional.

Si bien la apertura de las Representaciones en los países en Europa y Asia central es más reciente (1990-2000), la FAO implementó sus primeros proyectos en esta región en 1977.
La red actual de oficinas descentralizadas de la FAO abarca 152 países. Dentro de esta red, hay 85 Representaciones de países de la FAO, muchas de las cuales se establecieron entre 1977 y 1979.
La FAO tiene 5 Oficinas Regionales y 10 Oficinas Subregionales, 85 Representaciones, 6 Oficinas de Asociaciones y Oficinas de Enlace, 37 oficinas de acreditación múltiple, una Oficina de Programas, 4 Corresponsales Nacionales, 6 Oficinas de Enlace, 2 Oficinas de Información...
Las oficinas de asociación y enlace de la FAO han sido una forma de iniciar o fortalecer la presencia de la Organización en los países y de trabajar mejor con los donantes y los asociados.
El 45% del personal de la FAO trabaja en oficinas descentralizadas.
