FAO-AUC/DREA meeting on strengthening collaboration of resilience and a review of African Regional Initiative meeting “Building Resilience in Africa’s Drylands”

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and The Department of Rural Economy and Agriculture of the Africa Union commission (DREA-AUC) will hold a consultative meeting to agree on concrete areas of joint focus in addressing building resilience in Africa.

The key objective of the meeting is to identify and agree on the implementation of priority actions that speak to regional frameworks and contribute to aspirations as articulated in the Malabo Commitments.

The FAO-AUC/DREA meeting will also focus on fostering mutual understanding of ongoing programmes as well as identifying potential and new opportunities for strengthening resilience with a view to identifying areas for collaboration and ultimately agree on how to contribute to the attainment of the regional goals on resilience.

Specifically, the meeting aims to achieve key strategic priorities identified and prioritised within the framework of the Malabo Commitment on resilience; as well as the SDGs, agreements reached on a roadmap and related roles and responsibilities with respect to the follow-up actions after the meeting.

As a follow-up to the AUC-DREA/FAO consultation, the FAO Regional Office for Africa will meet to review and refine RAF Regional Initiative ‘Building Resilience in Africa’s Drylands)’ from 22nd to 23rd March, 2017, Accra.

The purpose of the meeting is to sharpen the focus of the Regional Initiative on building resilience to have a more strategic and programmatic focus which addresses continental challenges and aspirations as stated in the AU Malabo Declaration’s Commitment on resilience.

It will also look at how to effectively utilize the Regional Initiatives on resilience as a vehicle to promote design and implementation at country level of FAO “signature” programmes on resilience of vulnerable livelihoods.
