World Food Day Celebration

Theme: Change the future of migration: Invest in food security and rural development

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation (FAO) Regional Office for Africa will mark 37th World Food Day on the global theme: Change the future of migration: Invest in food security and rural development.The eventwill take place in Accra, Ghana, on 16th October, 2017.

FAO celebrates World Food Day each year on 16 October to commemorate the founding of the Organization in 1945. Events are organized in over 150 countries across the world, making it one of the most celebrated days of the UN calendar. These events promote worldwide awareness and action for those who suffer from hunger and for the need to ensure food security and nutritious diets for all.

World Food Day is a chance FAO to show its commitment to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2 – to achieve Zero Hunger by 2030. It’s also a day to celebrate the progress FAO has already made towards reaching zero hunger.

This year’s celebration coincides with the 40th anniversary of FAO representation in many African countries, a period characterized by fighting hunger, poverty and malnutrition.

A special feature of this year’s event is a live radio panel discussion which will highlight key aspects the theme.

The ceremony will be attended by Ministers, the Diplomatic corps, Government officials, Heads of UN agencies, CSOs, and FAO partners.
