East Africa Regional Dialogues: "Methane mitigation ambitions in the livestock sector: Strengthening institutional capacities and building networks to enhance climate action"

About

A short summary of a couple of paragraphs about the event.

Reducing methane emissions from ruminant livestock are critical to move towards long-term low GHG emission development. However, to turn this ambition into reality, countries and regional institutions need more robust information regarding technical interventions. In response to these needs, FAO, in partnership with partners is implementing the project “Creating the enabling environment for enhanced climate ambition and climate action through institutional capacity building.” The series of the regional dialogues are part of the activities considered by the project. The dialogue will assist key regional stakeholders with holding a peer-to-peer exchange and dialogue pertaining to ruminant methane and pathways to increase ambition on short-lived climate pollutants in the livestock sector. It also assists to Identifying specific opportunities or work areas to address ruminant methane mitigation via existing institutional pathways, current regional collaborations or platforms, and/or climate finance mechanisms.

Who

The dialogue is organized by FAO, Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse gases (GRA), New Zealand Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Center (NZAGRC) and Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), in partnership with Africa Low Emissions Development Strategies Partnership (AfLP).

Participants include the national representatives from key ministries and institutions, NDC/NAP focal points, inventory compilers, livestock and agricultural research institutions, and the private sector from the following countries: Burundi, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. Representatives from regional partnership organizations and international research institutions will also be invited: AGNES, FANRPAN, IGAD, and ILRI.

Why

The dialogue will identify a collective shared vision and set of expectations to inform the format of dialogues, but also the development of a mapping document that identifies priority action areas and potential options to increase methane mitigation ambitions in the livestock sector at the country and regional level.
