24 December 2014, Luanda, Angola - A round table consultative platform between the Government of Angola and partners/donors, facilitated by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) since 2011 and aiming at mobilizing resources for investing in the agricultural priority programmes, has just reviewed the roadmap of the Country Programming Framework (CPF) and other FAO’s supported regional initiatives such as one for a Renewed Partnership to End Hunger in Africa by 2025.

Angola’s CPF is in the second year of implementation since it was launched in February 2013 by the Minister of Agriculture and the FAO Director-General. The state of progress was presented to the Ministry of Agriculture and the donor community to update them on the implementation process.

“FAO continues to assist the country in fast-tracking the fight against hunger and widen the cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture through priority areas of intervention defined in the Country Programming Framework, a common agreement between FAO and the Government of Angola”, said Mr Mamoudou Diallo, FAO Representative in Angola.

The Angolan Secretary of State for Agriculture, Mr Amaro Tati, appreciated FAO’s on-going facilitating role in organizing this informative round table discussion, attended by 12 representatives of the main donors/partners and 32 representatives of national institutions. Mr Tati reaffirmed that the Government has committed to agricultural development and food and nutrition security by accelerating the implementation of its National Development Programme (PND-2013-2017) and more particularly its mid-term Rural Development Programme (PMDR).

Angola, one of the focus countries to end hunger in Africa

FAO Regional Office in Africa has developed three Regional Initiatives (RI) aimed at speeding up the fight against food insecurity and malnutrition in Africa. The Regional Initiatives have been designed to add value to existing development actions at country level by strengthening and promoting an integrated approach to food security. Angola volunteered to be one of the four pilot countries – along with Ethiopia, Malawi and Niger - on the Regional Initiative to End Hunger in Africa by 2025.

Opportunities for resource mobilization

The participants at the consultative round table were informed on the progress of FAO’s interventions and showed support to reinforce their assistance to the priority development areas of the Government.

The European Union, the African Development Bank, the World Bank and UNDP have confirmed funds availability..

“The round table allowed FAO to reinforce food security action in Angola. It was agreed that FAO continues its role of facilitating agency for the organization of next meetings”, confirmed Mamoudou Diallo.

Participants at the roundtable requested a regular updating of the database on investments in the agriculture sector.
