In the context of the 2014 International Year of Family Farming (IYFF), FAO and the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (AMARC) have launched an awareness campaign targeted at farmers’ organizations and the rural population. The main objective is to use community radio as a platform to share information with the farming community and involve them further in the discussion regarding the key role family farming plays in economic and social development.

Fishing for the Future
Fishing for the Future is a short film documentary elaborating one of components of the FAO European Union Food Facility Project activities in Cambodia. The film captures own-family-fish-pond culture which the project has been supported through provision of fingerlings, prawn larvae, lime and training to Cambodian farmers. The film also features community fish refuge ponds which the project supports through rehabilitation and committee set up and training.

Agricultural Business Centres -- Fueling Growth in Sierra Leone
Under the Smallholder Commercialization Programme, FAO supported the Global Agriculture and Food Security Program to implement Agicultural Business Centres (ABC) in order to improve food security for the most vulnerable population. This program has involved the Government of Sierra Leone under the National Sustainable Agriculture Development Plan. It has permitted to rural populations to organize themselves as producers organizations and cooperatives and to link with national markets.

24 فبراير/شباط 2014 – روما – تشكل الزراعة الأسرية في منطقة الشرق الأدنى ما يزيد على 80% من المزارع. ولذلك فإن هذا القطاع ينهض بدور كبير في الأمن الغذائي والاتساق الاجتماعي والاقتصادي للأسرة، وذلك من حيث الوظائف والإسكان والوضع الاجتماعي. كما تضمن الزراعة الأسرية تزويد أسواق المدن بالمنتوجات الغذائية، وتقدم فرصاً لوظائف جديدة. لكن الزراعة الأسرية، وبالرغم من ذلك، تواجه تحديات كثيرة، من ضمنها ضعف إمكانية الوصول إلى المدخلات الزراعية والأسواق، التي باتت تهيمن عليها بصورة متصاعدة سلاسل الشركات الكبيرة للبيع بالتجزئة، وكذلك الظروف المناخية القاسية وازدياد الهجرة من مناطق الريف. وهكذا فإن التكيف مع هذه التحديات يعدّ أمراً ضرورياً لكفالة الأمن الغذائي العالمي والتنمية الريفية المستدامة. وتتضمن المقابلات التالية آراء واقتراحات بعض المشاركين في حوار الشرق الأدنى الإقليمي بشأن الزراعة الأسرية الذي عقد خلال الفترة 20-21 نوفمبر/تشرين الثاني 2013 في مدينة تونس (تونس).

Priority issues for Near East food and agriculture brought to the table
A three-day technical meeting has come to a close for the Regional Conference for the Near East and North Africa (NERC32). During the conference, government ministers and senior officials from countries across the region reviewed the overall state of food and agriculture. They also discussed urgent issues facing countries, including the development of a strategy for sustainable water management, as the region faces what may be the most severe intensification of water scarcity in its history. The agenda also focused on reducing food losses and waste in the region; ensuring gender equality in agriculture and the rural sector; and, other priority areas for FAO’s work over the next two years. A two-day Ministerial Meeting opens today at FAO headquarters for Ministers from member countries across the region.
