Nigeria closes land borders to all goods

16/10/2019,

On 14 October, the Government announced an indefinite ban on imports and exports of all goods through land borders nationwide. A partial closure of the borders was already implemented on 20 August this year to curb the smuggling of rice and other goods. The measure aims to improve controls on traded products and bolster the country’s agriculture sector while lessening the dependency on foreign food. Although trade via seaports and airports will continue, the closure of land borders is likely to affect domestic availabilities of agricultural and livestock products, which could have an impact on prices of food and live animals in the coming months. The disruption of border trade activities is reportedly underpinning the price increases of fuel and some food products in countries of the subregion.
