Bangladesh to increase import duty on rice

02/12/2015,

The Government of Bangladesh is planning to increase the import duty on rice to encourage the consumption of the large stocks in the country and to protect producer prices. The country’s production of rice in 2015 reached a bumper level, with the main boro season output officially estimated at a record 28.8 million tonnes, following increased plantings. Rice millers in the country have recommended a raise in the duty from the current 10 percent to 30 percent but the Government has yet to announce its decision.
