Zambia to sell maize from state reserves to millers

09/12/2015,

The Zambian Food Reserve Agency (FRA) plans to begin sales of maize from its reserves to millers with immediate effect to control escalating prices. Maize is a staple food in the country and the FRA is estimated to hold stocks of about 1 million tonnes. Millers who participate in the voluntary programme will be sold maize at less than current market prices but will be legally required to sell breakfast meal, roller meal and maize bran in the wholesale market at no more than 70 Kwacha (USD 7), 55 Kwacha (USD 5) and 30 Kwacha (USD 3) for a 25 kg bag respectively. Furthermore, the programme will distribute relief maize to vulnerable households through the Governments Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU). The measure is expected to stay in place until June 2016.
