India to procure 33 million tonnes from the 2017 Rabi wheat crop

16/02/2017,

On 15 February, the Government set the Rabi wheat crop procurement target for the 2017/18 marketing year (April/March) at 33 million tonnes. This volume is more than 40 percent higher than amount purchased in the current season. The bulk of purchases, 11.5 million tonnes, are expected to originate from the key-producing State of Punjab, followed by 8.5 million tonnes in Madhya Pradesh, 7.5 million tonnes in Haryana, 3 million tonnes in Uttar Pradesh, 1.75 million tonnes in Rajasthan and the remaining volume will be sourced from the minor-growing areas of Bihar, Uttarakhand, Gujarat and other States. The larger procurement target reflects expectations of a record crop this year on account of increased plantings, following good monsoon rains and government support measures that include higher Minimum Support Prices (FPMA Food Policies). The Government also announced the procurement of 5 million tonnes of rice.
