Maize grain prices at near-record highs

The national average maize grain price dipped moderately in April 2024 but remained close to the record high of the previous month, underpinned by the effects of currency weakness. The impact of the El Niño-linked drought on domestic agricultural production in 2024 and consequently, national cereal supplies, is anticipated to be a key driver of inflationary pressure this year; the country is expected to not export any maize grain in 2024/25, in contrast to previous years when it was the second leading exporter of maize in the subregion.
