Global Soil Partnership

EC supporting GSP activities

Since its conception, the European Commission has been a major supporter for the establishment of the Global Soil Partnership, in line with the EU's Soil Thematic Strategy.  After extensive dialogue, a project proposal has been accepted in order to provide €1 million to the GSP for selected activities during 2014-2015.

The project is fully consistent with EU's declared policies and programmes in respect of  environmental protection and preservation of precious soil resources, in  particular the Soil Thematic Strategy and the Rio+20 follow up; and FAO's own Strategic Objectives, especially S02: "Increase and improve provision of goods and services from agriculture, forestry and fisheries in a sustainable manner".
In the broad gamut of GSP implementation requirements, the EC contribution supplemented by the FAO-GSP contribution, is to cover three essential components of distinct scope but which are part of broad continuum (and for which it is hoped technical cooperation funding sources will be willing to provide additional support in the future, as part of a resource mobilization effort fully focused on soils via the GSP) in the 2014-15 biennium:

  1. Support to the work of the Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils, including the organization of its (special) working session in early 2014;
  2. Development of detailed Implementation Plans at regional level under the global Plans of Action for each of the GSP Pillars;
  3. Capacity development on improved soil information (digital soil mapping) in areas of most critical need (Africa).
