Good rains bring some hope for war-torn Syrians

18 July 2017, Rome--- Food security in parts of Syria is slightly better than last year, according to two UN Agencies. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the World Food Programme are warning, however, that the overall situation remains far worse than before the war. In their latest Crop and Food Security Assessment Mission released today, total wheat production for the country is estimated to be 1.8 million tonnes. This is 12 percent more than last year’s record low harvest, but still less than half of the pre-conflict ten-year average.

Monika Tothova, an Economist with FAO in Rome, elaborates more on this. (Interview conducted by Murielle Sarr)
