Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development in Mountains (SARD-M) - May 2005
Sustainable livelihoods for mountain communities centred discussions among SARD-M Regional Focal Points in Asia, Europe and Central America, who met for the first time at FAO headquarters from 12 to 13 May 2005. The aim of the meeting was to coordinate and build synergies among Regional Focal Points activities, to compare methodologies and tools, exchange information and share experiences. The following are three selected interviews with participants:

1.Interview with Mr. Pema Gyamtsho, a member the Nepal-based International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and also FAO's SARD-M focal point for Hindu Kush, Himalayas Mountains. An important aspect of the Centre's mode of operation is its increased collaboration that focuses on supporting and initiating processes that will lead to appropriate policies for mountain areas in specific countries such as China and India.

2. Peter Trutmann, is SARD-M Focal point for the Andes Regions (Latin America). According to him, water is a crucial issue that needs to be addressed in priority through specific policies that take into account the legal aspects:

3. Carlos Perez, Regional Co-ordinator for the 'Programme for Sustainable agriculture in the hillsides of Central America' (PASOLAC). According to him, mountains must be part of policies to resolve concrete livelihood problems
