Barbados published its dietary guidelines in 2009.
Participating institutions
The guidelines were developed by the National Nutrition Centre (part of the Ministry of Health) with support from the FAO. They have been endorsed by the Cabinet and the Ministry of Health of Barbados.
Intended audience
The guidelines are aimed at the general population over 2 years of age.
Food guide
The Barbados map is the chosen food guide. The map shows the kinds of foods to choose for healthy eating. It is divided into the six Caribbean food groups: staples, vegetables, fruits, legumes, foods from animals and fats and oils; and surrounded by images of people doing physical activity.

- Eat a variety of foods every day.
- Eat vegetables every day.
- Eat fruits every day.
- Use high fibre foods every day.
- Consume less sugar, sugar-containing foods and sweet beverages.
- Engage in physical activity every day.
- Use less salt and high sodium foods.
