Over 50 institutions and individuals endorsed “The Cancun Statement” calling for the promotion of sustainable pastoralism and livestock production for the conservation of biodiversity in grasslands and rangelands.

The statement was presented on the sidelines of the 13th meeting of the Coalition of Parties (COP13) on the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in Cancun, Mexico.

Pastoralist organizations from Eastern and Southern Africa urge policy makers and international organizations to listen to pastoralists’ voices better and to take action in favour of pastoralism. This declaration expresses their needs, priorities and recommendations. This document was prepared at the pastoralist gathering in January 2016 in Lukenya, Kenya.

This declaration, prepared at the meeting of Central Asian pastoralists in July 2015, calls on national governments, international organizations, the United Nations and civil society organizations to consult and include the Central Asian pastoralist network in workshops, conferences, policy processes and programmes that may affect pastoralism in Central Asia.

December 9th to 15th 2013: 120 pastoralist leaders representing communities in 48 countries worldwide gathered in Kiserian, Kenya, to share experiences and concerns about the Global Transition to a Green Economy. Pastoralism—the extensive production of livestock in rangeland ecosystems—is one of the most environmental friendly food systems on earth, but its potential to provide meat, milk and fibre as well as environmental services, such as climate change mitigation, biodiversity conservation and protection of water sheds, is continuously eroded by poorly conceived policies and investments, by neglectof basic human rights, and by disruption to appropriate rangeland management practices, including mobility.

The representatives of the governments of the six countries of the Sahel (Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, and Senegal) gathered in Nouakchott by invitation of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, the Permanent Interstate Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (CILSS), and the World Bank in collaboration with the African Union Commission, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU), and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and in the presence of representatives of international and regional research organizations, civil society organizations, producers' organizations, the private sector, and technical and financial partners, for the purpose of strengthening the resilience of Sahelo-Saharan pastoral societies.

The N’djamena Declaration, adopted by Ministers responsible for livestock and security from a number of African countries, calls upon the Sahelian, West African, Central African, North African and international communities to unite in a spirit of peace, tolerance and sharing, in order to promote peace and sustainable development for the Saharo-Sahelian areas. Only by supporting pastoralism, regional stability can be maintained.
