In the context of Expo Milano 2015, the European Commission is pleased to invite you to an international conference on “Fight Food Waste, Feed the Planet”. The conference will take place on 15 October 2015 at the Expo Conference Centre in Milan, Italy. “Fight Food Waste, Feed the Planet” aims to contribute to the setting of European Union and global directions on food waste prevention, focusing on the importance of effective linkages and cooperation from farm to fork. This regional dialogue for Latin America and the Caribbean will take place on 23–24 September in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. It will involve representatives of national authorities with links to initiatives and working groups on food loss and waste, members of national committees on food security and hunger eradication, technicians, researchers, civil society, academics and food industry and other actors involved in the food system. From 1 to 30 October 2015, FAO will host an e-conference organized by the Livestock Production Systems Branch of the Animal Production and Health Division. The e-conference will seek guidance on: i) the aims, scope and boundaries of a framework for using food loss, food waste and non-food parts as livestock feed; b) implementation of the framework; and c) stakeholders’ roles in implementation – academics, the feed and food industries, civil society, policy-makers, extension workers and farmers. The World Packaging Organisation (WPO) invites students from all over the world to submit their packaging projects to the WPO WorldStar Student Award to compete in the new Save Food Student Packaging Award. UK Parliament
On behalf of 16 European national governments, the European Union Select Committee of the United Kingdom Government’s upper house (the House of Lords) issued the first ever “Green Card”, calling on the European Commission to take action to combat food waste. Read more...


International conference of Agricultural Economists
During the workshop, held in Milan, Italy on 8 August, participants stressed the need for clear definitions of food loss and waste to ensure accurate quantification and interpretation. When measuring impacts, it is important to differentiate between: i) avoidable waste for which there is an economically efficient solution; and ii) avoidable waste for which there is no economically efficient solution, such as picking the last grain from the field. Researchers at the University of Missouri have found that the type of food wasted has a significant influence on the environmental impact of the waste. Although, on average, less meat is wasted than fruits and vegetables, the researchers found that significantly more energy is used in the production of meat compared with the production of vegetables. An interesting initiative for reducing food waste in Italy offers diners an opportunity to package their leftovers and take them home. The campaign was launched following establishment of the Carta per una Rete di Enti Territoriali a Spreco Zero [Charter for a Network of Zero Waste Local Authorities], which the Municipality of Monza subscribed to last year. Local authorities adhering to the charter are introducing Tenga il Resto and other initiatives for limiting the waste of resources and energy. Read more...


Partners' actions


AFAAS is organizing a side-event on post-harvest management of grains during the AFAAS Second Africa Wide Agricultural Extension Week 2015, 12–16 October, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Global Programme Food Security (GPFS) of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) has embarked on an umbrella programme on post-harvest management in sub-Saharan Africa (PHM-SSA), which pursues the goal of increasing the food security of smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa through reduced post-harvest losses at the farm and community levels.

FoodSharing

Sign up now for WuppDays 2015, 20 September to 15 October. The main objective is to develop a worldwide and free open-source platform in multiple languages that will give wings to the international food-sharing movement.


Forrest Innovations

Forrest Innovations is planning to hold two workshops in the next months. The theme of the first workshop is "Promoting sustainable food consumption in the age of plenty" and will be held on 17 September, while the second workshop on 14 October is intended to have activities for children and participants from the industry.
