Academician Abdulla Garayev Institute of Physiology
The Academician Abdulla Garayev Institute of Physiology was established in 1968. From the first days at the Institute, along with fundamental investigations aimed at solving urgent biological and medical problems, research was also carried out that met the requirements of the development of agriculture in the Azerbaijan Republic. Applied works using the country's resources, aimed at studying the medicinal properties of Naftalan oil and mineral waters in physiological and clinical aspects, contributed to the development of balneological resorts. Ecotoxicological studies conducted at the Institute are aimed at the ecological and physiological study of the state of fish and other hydrobionts living in the rivers and lakes of the country and the coastal zones of the Caspian Sea in order to monitor and maintain their biodiversity. Particular attention is paid to the study of the impact of fertilizers used in agriculture and industrial waste on the physiological parameters of aquatic animals. In various geographical and ecological regions of Azerbaijan, electroencephalographic, electrocardiological, biochemical, genetic, and psychophysiological assessments of the physiological state of centenarians are carried out to identify the role of environmental factors in the formation of the longevity phenomenon. The influence of adverse environmental factors such as hypoxia, non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation, and magnetic storms on the physiological and reproductive functions of humans and animals is intensively studied using biochemical, biophysical, immunological, and neurophysiological methods.
The Institute has 170 members of staff, including 88 Researchers, 11 Doctors of Sciences and Professors, and 41 Doctors of Philosophy. There are 12 laboratories and 3 general departments in the structure of the Institute. The Institute of Physiology has a Doctoral Program in Biological Sciences, including specializations in Human and Animal Physiology and Biochemistry, and a Doctoral Dissertation Defense Committee.
