African Union Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR)

Kenya
The African Union Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR) is a specialized technical office under the Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy, and Sustainable Environment (DARBE) of the African Union Commission (AUC). AU-IBAR leads the charge in advancing the development and sustainable management of Africa’s animal resources—including livestock, fisheries, wildlife, and apiculture (beekeeping).

In response to the continent’s growing demand for animal products, AU-IBAR plays a proactive role in revitalizing the sector through innovation, evidence-based policy support, capacity building, and multi-sectoral partnerships. Currently guided by its 2024-2028 Strategic Plan, AU-IBAR aligns its interventions with continental frameworks and Member States’ priorities to promote inclusive growth, food and nutritional security, and resilience across Africa’s animal resource systems.

Working through the Regional Economic Communities, and in close collaboration with Centres of Excellence, and Development Partners, Academia/ Research Institutions, and the Private Sector, AU-IBAR provides strategic leadership to strengthen Africa’s animal resources sector as a pillar of food security, economic growth, and rural livelihoods.
