Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) is a national public institution and the oldest higher education institution in Mozambique. The institution was established on 21st August 1962 under the name Estudos Gerais Universitários de Moçambique, as per the Decree-Law no. 44530. In 1968, it was elevated to the University status and was then called Universidade de Lourenço Marques. On 1st May 1976, President Samora Moisés Machel formally designated the institution Eduardo Mondlane University, thereby honouring the significant historical contributions of Dr. Eduardo Chivambo Mondlane in Mozambique.
