Society for Regional and Environmental Studies

Finland
The Society for Regional and Environmental Studies (Alue- ja Ympäristötutkimuksen Seura, AYS) was a multidisciplinary scientific society in Finland that brought together scholars in human geography, environmental social sciences, and regional studies. Founded in 1970, the society promoted critical academic dialogue, social responsibility, and collaboration between researchers, policymakers, and civil society. AYS was best known for publishing the open-access journal Alue & Ympäristö (Region & Environment) and the public-facing series Versus, which contributed significantly to Finnish environmental and regional discourse. The society also participated in national science policy discussions and was a member of the Federation of Finnish Learned Societies. After 55 years of activity, the Society formally ceased operations in April 2025, marking the end of its institutional role, though its publications and influence remain significant in the academic landscape.

The Society for Regional and Environmental Research has been closed down as of April 8, 2025. The Society for Social and Environmental Research will continue to publish the journal for Regional and Environmental Studies.
