Institute of Agrobiological Research of Galicia (IIAG)
España
The Instituto de Investigaciones Agrobiológicas de Galicia (IIAG-CSIC) is a research centre belonging to the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), based at the South Campus of the University of Santiago de Compostela. It was founded in 1953 as a section of the Institute of Soil Science and Plant Physiology in Madrid, and began its work in the Department of Applied Geology of the Faculty of Pharmacy, when it was housed in the monumental Fonseca Palace. After several name changes, it received its current name in 1974.
The fundamental objective of its creation was to promote and encourage research into soil science and plant biology in Galicia, in order to improve agriculture in the region. The research topics and methodologies have evolved over the years, in line with the priorities and new technologies of each moment, but always with the same objectives: knowledge of the soils of the Spanish humid zone and vegetative propagation through in vitro cultivation of species selected for their forestry, ornamental or agricultural interest.
