AGRIS Elevates Agricultural Knowledge Sharing Across Africa

FAO/Luis Tato

In the ever-evolving landscape of agricultural knowledge, the International System for Agricultural Science and Technology (AGRIS), under the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), is embarking on a journey to strengthen its presence in Africa. Collaborating with the Information Training & Outreach Centre for Africa (ITOCA), this initiative aims to tackle existing challenges and foster an active community of data providers in key African nations.

Targeting countries such as Botswana, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Uganda, Senegal, South Africa, and Tunisia, the project sets out to build a robust network that includes academic institutions, development programs, international and national organizations, governmental bodies, libraries, publishers, and research centers.

The initiative centers around strategic engagement, effective communication, and capacity building. This involves identifying stakeholders, providing support to enhance their visibility and accessibility, and fostering the improvement of their agricultural scientific knowledge through the AGRIS platform. Moreover, its goal is to lay the groundwork for ongoing and expanded AGRIS participation in the target countries.

Leveraging ITOCA's experience, the project incorporates coordination with data providers, workshops, and webinars to facilitate direct interactions and collaboration. This ensures that both new and existing data providers integrate into the AGRIS Network, contributing valuable metadata.

This initiative will significantly heighten awareness of AGRIS and improve the registration process for new data providers. By enhancing the registration procedures, the network will become more robust, thereby facilitating better data sharing and management.

The AGRIS initiative represents a significant step towards fostering a connected African agricultural knowledge community. It aims to improve the visibility and accessibility of technical and scientific agricultural information on the continent, showcasing a commitment to impactful partnerships that drive positive change in global agricultural practices.
