FAO AGRIS supports global access to agricultural research by bringing together metadata from over 2,000 institutions around the world. Through this collaborative network, scientific knowledge becomes more visible, discoverable and accessible to diverse audiences across countries and regions.
However, increasing visibility is only one part of the process.
Ensuring that research is also accessible, reusable and interoperable is essential to strengthening its contribution to global agrifood systems. Open and machine-readable data enables information to move beyond individual platforms, supporting integration across systems and facilitating broader use by researchers, institutions and developers.
The AGRIS Open Data Set (ODS) plays a key role in this process. By making metadata available as open data, it allows records contributed to FAO AGRIS to be reused, connected and applied in different contexts. This enhances the usability of data and supports knowledge exchange at a global scale.
For data providers already contributing to FAO AGRIS, this represents an opportunity to further extend the value of their data. If you don’t know if your records are included in the FAO AGRIS ODS, or if you want them to be, we encourage you to contact for further information at [email protected].
New data providers can also benefit from this approach by selecting the option to share their records through the FAO AGRIS ODS when completing the registration form.
Accessible and interoperable data contributes to more effective research ecosystems. It enables researchers to build on existing knowledge, supports the development of new tools and services, and strengthens the capacity of institutions to manage and share information. In this way, individual contributions become part of a wider, interconnected system that supports informed decision-making and sustainable agrifood transformation.
