From 7 to 11 July 2025, the Hand-in-Hand Initiative (HIH) convened a regional geospatial training and capacity building Workshop in Fiji, marking an important milestone in advancing digital transformation across the Pacific. The training, organized by the FAO Pacific Subregional Office brought together representatives from Fiji, Kiribati, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu, with participants drawn from ministries of agriculture and statistics.

Their work spans agricultural product quality analysis, poverty monitoring, ancient agricultural knowledge digitization, and AI-driven applications such as large language models.

FAO has released an updated version of the Global Administrative Unit Layers (GAUL) dataset al level 1 and 2, as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen the geospatial foundation of global food and agriculture systems. With the launch of the FAO Agro-Informatics Platform (AIP)—a centralized hub unlocking millions of geospatial data layers across domains including food security, agricultural production, and natural resources—GAUL has been revitalized to once again serve as a key dataset in FAO’s spatial data ecosystem.

From 11 to 29 November 2024, FAO delivered a comprehensive Geographic Information System (GIS) training program to boost the technical skills of FAO Ukraine personnel, with focus on improving their project reporting practices. The training targeted project managers, researchers, and professionals involved in project reporting who needed to create and publish maps, regardless of prior GIS experience.

Mauritania, December 2024 – The FAO has initiated a major project to modernize hydro-agricultural development in the Senegal River Valley and foster resilience to climate change through a comprehensive strategy. The inception workshop, held in Boghé, formally launched the project “Technical support to the National Society for Rural Development for the updating of the master plan for hydro-agricultural developments in the Senegal River Valley in Mauritania and the development of a climate investment plan” (TCP/MAU/4001).
