Milestones and achievements

2025

FAO publishes the updated Global Plan for Action for the Conservation, Sustainable Use and Development of Forest Genetic Resources, agreed by the Commission at its Twentieth Regular Session and adopted by the FAO Conference in 2025.

2025

FAO launches The Second Report on the State of the World’s Forest Genetic Resources and a new global information system (SilvaGRIS). The report draws on data and information from 77 countries, representing more than three-quarters of the world’s forests. It provides the second global assessment of forest genetic resources and examines progress in implementing the Global Plan of Action. 

2023

The Commission takes note of the Second Report on the implementation of the Global Plan of Action and invites countries to continue monitoring the status of forest genetic resources and their implementation efforts. 

2019

The Commission adopts a funding strategy for the implementation of the Global Plan of Action and takes note of the first report on its implementation.

2017

The Commission adopts targets, indicators and verifiers for forest genetic resources to be used for monitoring the implementation of the Global Plan of Action.

2014

FAO publishes the Global Plan for Action for the Conservation, Sustainable Use and Development of Forest Genetic Resources, agreed by the Commission at its Fourteenth Regular Session and adopted by the FAO Conference in 2013.

2014

FAO launches the first report on The State of the World’s Forest Genetic Resources. The report was prepared based on information provided by 86 countries, outcomes from regional and subregional consultations and information compiled in thematic studies. It constitutes a major step in creating awareness and building the information and knowledge base for action to enhance the conservation and sustainable use of forest genetic resources at national, regional and international levels.

2009

The Commission establishes the Intergovernmental Technical Working Group on Forest Genetic Resources.
