The number of people facing acute hunger is likely to further increase throughout 2021

Acute hunger at crisis or worse levels has increased in 2020, and the situation is likely to further deteriorate throughout 2021 and beyond without urgent and scaled up action. Pre-existing vulnerabilities due to intensifying conflict, historic flooding, an unprecedented desert locust upsurge and economic crises have been exacerbated by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, the number of people experiencing acute food insecurity is expected to exceed 2019’s high of 135 million people worldwide.

Amid ongoing humanitarian crises, protecting livelihoods saves lives, contributes to improved food security and helps to strengthen resilience to future shocks. In 2021, FAO will continue to expand its anticipatory action and scale up its response to strengthen resilience. Investing in the most vulnerable people and their livelihoods is crucial for them to lead their future recovery and pull themselves out of acute hunger.
