FAO emergencies and resilience

Democratic Republic of the Congo

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has one of the world’s highest number of people in high acute food insecurity. The country continues to face a complex humanitarian crisis, driven by armed conflict, climate shocks and a rapidly expanding Ebola virus disease outbreak. Compounding the situation are economic challenges linked to the depreciation of the local currency and high food and fuel prices, as well as structural weaknesses such as extreme poverty. The agriculture sector, which employs 70 percent of the working population, remains under-exploited despite its potential linked to arable land, water resources and biodiversity. Life-saving agricultural assistance can help vulnerable households produce their own food and generate income.
