Korea celebrates its 21st Food Safety Day

20/05/2022

To raise awareness of the importance of ensuring food safety, on 13 May 2022, the Republic of Korea celebrated its Food Safety Day with the slogan “Food Safety Together, Healthy Korea.” The country started this campaign in 2002, and this year marked the 21st celebration with a hybrid event that included in-person participation as well as a broadcast on YouTube.

At the main event, the Minister Kim Ganglip (pictured) applauded Korea's achievements in this field, including the establishment of the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, which has enabled Korea to focus its efforts on food safety and has resulted in the country becoming one of the global leaders in food safety. He also expressed his gratitude to all the stakeholders, including food producers, academia, and consumers, and emphasized their solid dedication and the spirit of working together.

“The Republic of Korea has always been a strong supporter of the Codex Secretariat. Last year was particularly successful for our cooperation because we finalized the work of the Task Force on Antimicrobial Resistance. Two important texts were adopted by the Codex Alimentarius Commission. In addition to that, I am excited that last year we also concluded the agreement on a forward-looking project for the implementation of the Codex texts on AMR, where the Republic of Korea sponsored a huge project in a number of countries that will receive help to implement those texts“, said Codex Secretary Tom Heilandt in a video address recorded for the event.
