Celebrating the 60th anniversary of Codex in Japan

Japan joined the celebrations for the 60th anniversary of the Codex Alimentarius Commission, by organizing the online symposium “Celebrating 60th Anniversary of Codex Alimentarius Commission – looking 10 years ahead to ensure international food safety,” which was held on the 24th of July, 2023 in Tokyo.

The event was opened by the video message by Steve Wearne, Chairperson of Codex Alimentarius Commission followed by two keynote speakers, namely Vittorio Fattori, FAO Food Safety Officer, and  Yukiko Yamada, International Food Safety Consultant. The panel, moderated by Dr. Takahiro Watanabe, National Institute of Health Sciences, NIHS, and composed by inviting Prof. Koji Miura, Adviser, Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, MHLW, Tetsuo Urushiyama, Associate Director, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, MAFF, and Waki Matsunaga, Science Journalist and FSC Commissioner, discussed future challenges and issues in ensuring food safety globally. The symposium was attended online by circa 500 participants.

The online symposium was hosted by the MHLW research group funded by the Health and Labour Science Research Grants, Research Program on Food Safety, and co-hosted by MHLW, MAFF, Consumer Affairs Agency (CAA), Food Safety Commission (FSC), and the Institute for Future Initiatives (IFI) of the University of Tokyo. The MHLW research group has been organizing Codex-related symposiums at the University of Tokyo, under the guidance of Prof. Makiko Matsuo, since 2013, and this event marks the 10th annual event held under this programme.
