Application of Appropriate Technology for Reducing Consumer Food Waste

A wide range of technology can play an important role in how consumers perceive and interact with food.

Refrigerators are an important technology at consumer level for maintaining quality and retarding spoilage. Freezing is also an important way of storing fish and fish products and preventing spoilage and waste.

Mobile phone and tablet technology can be a way of communicating with consumers. For example, much of the information aimed at consumers under the Norwegian ForMat Project - a food waste prevention initiative – was communicated via social media. This included weekly ideas on Facebook and Twitter under the concept of “Leftovers Thursday”, to maintain awareness of eating up fridge leftovers at least once a week.
