Food Loss and Waste Database

The Food Loss and Waste database is the largest online collection of data - on both food loss and food waste - reported in scientific journals, academic publications, and grey literature. The database contains data and information from openly accessible databases, reports and studies measuring food loss and waste across food products, stages of the value chain, and geographical areas. As of January 2026, the database included more than 700 publications and reports from a wide range of sources, including subnational reports, academic studies, FAOSTAT, and publications by national and international organizations such as the World Bank, GIZ, FAO and IFPRI. The database currently contains almost 40,000 data points from 167 countries, covering 296 commodities and commodity groups, and grew by more than 2,400 data points in 2025 alone. This is a live database with continuous validation and addition of data on food loss and waste that is reported in scientific journals, academic publications, grey literature, and country reports among others. Data can be queried, downloaded, and plotted in an interactive and structured way. The database can be used by anyone who wishes to know more about food losses and waste.
